Little is known about Richard. He was living in Snow Hill, Maryland (Worcester County) about 1753. Tradition has it that the family suffered horrors and privations during the Revolutionary War. This may have been involved in their decision to move to North Carolina about 1778. Richard Hartley was a taxpayer in Rowan County, North Carolina in 1778 in Morris District. He moved to North Carolina about 1778.
He was born between 1710 and 1720 probably in Scotland. He owned property on which he was assessed 195 pounds in Captain. Moore’s District in 1778 in the area on the east side of the Yadkin River. He died between 1780 and 1782 in Rowan County, North Carolina. The last record found for Richard Hartley occurs when he is appointed as Constable in February 2, 1779, and again February 12, 1780 when he and Henry Moore, Constables in Captain (Robert) Moore’s District are ordered to notify inhabitants of their District to make returns of their taxable property. He received payment for Constable duty in 1778-80, and paid taxes in 1780 in Rowan County, North Carolina. He filed a land entry in 1778 for 300 acres which his sons Benjamin and Laban took up in 1782. The birth of Richard was estimated from available data based upon averages. His marriage to Abigail “Green” is speculation based upon time frame and church affiliation for the purpose of further research.
Bill Skinner says Richard was married to Abigail Green between 1743 and 1745. Abigail was born between 1730 and 1740 perhaps in New Jersey. She was a Baptist between 1785 and 1810 in Jersey Baptist Church by letter. The church was founded in 1784 at the Jersey settlement in Rowan County, North Carolina. Abigail Hartley transferred her membership October 22, 1785 by letter. She died about July, 1810 in Rowan County, North Carolina. The name Green is just a working hypothesis.
